Just after I read this, I read obituary of NYC urban planner/architect Alexander Garvin, whose approach seems similar to yours (or vice versa). https://wapo.st/3pR04Fl
Well done 👏👏👏 -- Definitely staying tuned on this.
Would love to read more about the genesis of your partnership. Do you all have experience doing real estate projects? How do you work with each other? What do your conversations look like?
Thanks, Toma! We're very fortunate with our partnership. Four of us are cousins and one is a dear family friend. We all come from a variety of professional backgrounds, which is instrumental in helping us navigate the complexities of such an intricate project. One of us is a general contractor, another an executive in the attraction services industry, and my business is in real estate development. Family and business don't normally mix, but we've been able to create a system that really works for us. Looking forward to our chat at Lucky's. Talk soon.
Gee, it really does seem like a missed opportunity not to include a second floor for offices and apartments, it is just what people are looking for and is so much less expensive to do in new construction……..
Hebe - I agree, 2nd floor office & apartments would be terrific. That said, we do have financial constraints. If we ultimately manage to find a way to swing a 2nd floor, then fantastic. However, based on our analysis to date, the economics of that has proven difficult. And better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without.
This grant is focused on hospitality so office/apartments would have been a tough sell. There’s also a cap on funds available per project for this one. I haven’t seen any other grants out there for apartment or office development but we are keeping our ears to the ground.
Superb plan and article. One small "complaint". There is at least one good "watering hole"only 8 miles north of Fairlee, owned by Bradford natives. That doesn't mean that there isn't a place for a good drinking/socializing place in Fairlee; three is, but recognize that other local folks have also contributed greatly to their community over the past 40 plus years.
Bud - you are absolutely right. This is by no means an isolated project. In fact, we're fortunate to have the level of community commitment and involvement that already makes Fairlee a spectacular place. I did not intend to downplay that by any means. Thanks for acknowledging this.
Thanks for not considering a strip mall or storage units. Your plans are very interesting and I wish you the best of luck.
Thanks Steven!
This is so freaking exciting!!

Fascinating. It sounds like Jane Jacobs was a heavy influence in his work. She is someone we can all learn from. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, yes, I agree, but might it not increase the number of institutions that might help with funding?
